The story behind this turtle
Sadly, this species is almost extinct in the wild. This species has been living with us since 1974 and was imported from India. Since then, breeding projects were initiated by Turtle Island in Bangladesh with more than 300 animals at two different locations. Nowadays, in cooperation with “Zoo Schönbrunn“, we have projects where turtles are released back into the wild and can be monitored and tracked via satellite transmittors. This is especially difficult with this species because it is supposed to be a delicacy in its countries of origin. With its urge to move it exceeds the limits of the largest national parks in a very short time.
